Overview
BluegrassNet is facilitating high-capacity, extremely reliable enterprise-grade Internet connections throughout our service areas. These are connections that range between 10Mbps through 155Mbps.
Internet connections that are capable of this capacity and reliability are generally run over sometype of fiber based network. In the past, this was through traditional telco provisioning, such as DS-3 (also known as T-3) which is 45Mbps, or OC-3, which is 155Mbps. These telco loops, between the customer and ISP, are very reliable, yet are relatively expensive since they are based on mileage sensitive tarriffed services. Recently, we have seen a new transport option being delivered by several telephone companies in our service areas called Ethernet (which can run between 10Mbps and 100Mbps, and anywhere in between).
BluegrassNet is currently connected to four fiber carriers in the Metro Louisville and Lexington areas: Bellsouth, Telcove, Espedius, and Alltel. This is of critical importance since we can benefit from the many different buildings that these various companies have run their network to. Most of these carriers are now offering both Ethernet and Provisioned Services (DS-3 and OC-3), and being connected to these companies helps us get our customers provisioned quickly.

| Who would benefit from these types of connections?
If you need a connection that can handle wide swings in usage, for example to accommodate bandwidth spikes at certain times of the day, this type of connection would be for you. If you are hosting mission critical servers, or servers that are supporting many outside connections, these connections would be for you as well. If you need to move large amounts of data off-site frequently for back-up purposes, this type of connection would be justified. If you are a service provider, you could rely on BluegrassNet as primary or backup connection. Our engineers are very experienced at setting up multiple connections, from multiple providers, so we can help you with this as well.
Considerations related to Ethernet
- More economical than DS-3 and OC-3
- Requires less routing and termination equipment than DS3/OC3
- Generally limited to immediate Metro areas, not state-wide
- Network is shared between multiple connections
Considerations related to T-3 / OC-3
- Available in most areas of Kentucky and Southern Indiana
- Extremely Reliable
- Direct point to point connection
- Termination equipment significantly more expensive
- Monthly recurring generally more expensive
