Overview For Beginners On FTP
When you build a webpage, and you are finished, you need to upload that webpage to a webserver. This is the computer that "hosts" your website for the world to see.
The way that you transfer these files is through a process called "FTP". That stands for: File Transfer Protocol. Basically, this is done by using a piece of software (which is usually free) that you have on your computer.
In order to use this software you will need to know the following things from your ISP (Internet Service Provider):
The Host: That's the name of the computer you will be uploading the website to. An example of a host would be: www.domain.com
The Account: That's the name of your space on that computer.
The Password: You have the ISP set this for you.
Once you know those three items, you should be able to use most FTP softwares to successfully upload your site.
There are several FTP softwares to choose from, but we provide instructions for using "SmartFTP" in the next column. There are FTP features built into Dreamweaver, GoLive, or other Web Design programs that work in a similar manner. All will work with BluegrassNet Web Servers. |
