General Information about BluegrassNet's FrontPage-Based Hosting Accounts

BluegrassNet's FrontPage-Based Hosting Accounts are hosted Windows servers. They have the Microsoft FrontPage extensions (also referred to as "components") installed to the web servers to add FrontPage based functions and features.

There are several types of FrontPage-Based accounts:

FrontPage 2002 extensions on Windows 2000 Server
FrontPage 2000 extensions on Windows NT Server

Your server should have the same kind of extensions as the version of FrontPage software you are using to design your site. The FrontPage 2002 enabled servers will support either FrontPage 2002 or FrontPage 2000 but not both. Note that features of the product you use to design with will be all that is available. In other words, if you use FrontPage 2002 to design the site, do not later edit it with FrontPage 2000. You can use FrontPage 2000 and later use FrontPage 2002, but do not attempt to go back to FrontPage 2000 later as this may cause problems.

Our FrontPage accounts are optimized for users of Microsoft FrontPage software. You don't need to use FTP, you don't need to worry about getting CGI scripts to run. Everything you do is through the FrontPage product.

Throughout this site, we will give instructions for both FrontPage 2002 and FrontPage 2000. We will always specify which software we are giving instructions for. For the most part the two versions are very similar.

It is recommended that the first thing you do is connect directly to your FrontPage virtual server account. Make sure you are online and connected to the internet. Now run Microsoft FrontPage.


In FrontPage 2002 or 2000, select the command File-->Open Web. Now type in "http://www.yourdomain.com" leaving off the quotes. Example: http://www.bluegrass.net

Press the enter key. In a few seconds you will be prompted for a user name and password. Enter your UserID and password in the appropriate spaces, check the box if you want the information saved for your next connection. You are now connected directly to your FrontPage virtual server.

Now, once it is loaded, you should see one file there, called index.html. This is the name of your main page. It starts out as an under construction page, but when you are ready to upload your own web pages, make sure your own main page is named index.html, so the "under construction" page will be deleted, and your own home page will be visible from the web.

Creating Your Pages

To create your web pages,

select: File-->New--> Web

The Wizard pops up. Select the type of web to create and click OK
Follow the wizard as it guides you through the process.

Creating your web pages is up to you. Refer to your manual or online help. You can add features with the click of your mouse. You can use the FrontPage components to create a feedback form or discussion web or take advantage of new FrontPage 2002 SharePoint® services.

Uploading Pages

To publish web pages with Microsoft FrontPage, follow these procedures:

First, make sure you are online, connected to the internet through your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Uploading Pages with FrontPage 2002 or 2000

After you have created your web pages as desired, select the command:
File --> Publish Web

Specify the location to publish your web to:

Location: www.yourdomain.com
Publish all pages, overwriting any already on the destination: checked

Now, hit Publish, and after a short pause, you will be prompted for more information:

Name: USERID ( Your User ID )
Password: PASSWORD ( Your Password )
That is all! Your pages will now be uploaded to your server.
Note: If at any time the "Web Publishing Wizard" appears, something is wrong. Your FrontPage account has the FrontPage extensions installed, so the Wizard should not load. Try connecting directly, using the File-->Open Web command. If this does not work, you should contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider). Their connection may have a problem, or they may be failing a reverse name lookup, and cannot be given a socket to connect properly.

Uploading Pages with FrontPage98

After you have created your web pages as desired, select the command:
File --> Publish FrontPage Web

A box will appear. Type in the following URL: http://www.yourdomain.com

Replacing USERID with your own UserID of course.

Now click okay. Check the box that says "Publish Changed Pages Only."

Now, hit okay, and after a short pause, you will be prompted for more information:

Name: USERID ( Your User ID )
Password: PASSWORD ( Your Password )
That is all! Your pages will now be uploaded to your server.
Note: If at any time the "Web Publishing Wizard" appears, something is wrong. Your FrontPage Virtual Server has the FrontPage extensions installed, so the Wizard should not load. Try connecting directly, using the File-->Open FrontPage Web command. If this does not work, you should contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider). FTP and FrontPage

You must not use FrontPage FTP to upload to your website account. You must publish your pages with FrontPage. If you use FTP from FrontPage you will destroy the extensions on the server. Never publish to a FrontPage server starting the location with ftp:// <--this is incorrect. ALWAYS start the location with http:// <--this is correct

The reason for this is that the FrontPage extensions have a security feature which does not allow you ownership or read/write-permission for your website directory.

You can connect directly your site in FrontPage, comparable to an FTP connection. Use the File-->Open FrontPage Web command.

You can (and must) use a separate FTP client to upload to your Public FTP directory, if you need to keep files there. The permissions restriction applies only to your website directory.

Feedback Forms for FrontPage98

These instructions are for FrontPage98:

For a feedback form, use the Insert-->Form Field command in the FrontPage editor. Make sure you have a push button as one of the components. Right-click on the push-button and choose Form Properties.

A box will say "What to do with form results?" If you want to save the results to a file, just put the file name you desire in the box that says "file name."

For a feedback form that is mailed to you, instead of Save Results:
Though FrontPage98 is supposed to provide an e-mail feedback form, it doesn't work on this service. Not to worry though, we have provided a cgi script that you can use.
NOTE: If you have the Secure Socket Layer add-on, then you can run some cgi on that, and run your own cgi script if you desire.

Instructions:

In the FrontPage Editor, select a form field and right-click. Select "Form Properties."

Click "Send to other" and make sure it says Custom ISAPI, NSPAPI, CGI or ASP Script.

Now click "Options." For "Action," put this URL:

http://www.yourdomain.com/cgi-bin/formmail.pl

Click OK.

Now click the button marked "Advanced."

It should say "Hidden Fields." Click "Add."

For the "Name" field: type the word "recipient" (no quotes)

For the "Value" field: type name@domain.com (the e-mail address to which you want the form mailed)

That's it. Just click the "OK" boxes until you're done, and save this file, publish it, and test it online.

If you get this: Bad Referrer - Access Denied

when you try to submit the form, visit our trouble ticketing system and ask to be added to the formmail list. We have a security protocol setup to protect against spammers. Only if your domain name is in the cgi script can you use this. If it doesn't work, no problem, we'll put your domain name in the list within 24 hours.

Note: You cannot have a custom confirmation page with this method.

Click on Settings.

In action, put this: "mailto:anyname@yourdomain.com"

where "yourdomain.com" is your domain name.

Password Protection

If you have private information on your website that you want to make available only to a select few, you can create a sub-web for this purpose. Put all your private info in a sub-web, that is, a FrontPage that is uploaded to something other than <Root Web>. Then you can select the Tools-->Permissions and restrict access to that sub-web.

Deleting Pages and Webs

To delete files, or sub-webs, connect directly to your site, using the File-->Open Web command. Once you are connected, any changes you make happen on the server.

Important: If you delete a file or folder, there is no "undelete" to get it back!
